The Project

A man distraught over the apparent loss of his fiancee joins a grief therapy group and interacts with strangers sharing loss of a loved one.  While he finds comfort in their stories of grief, his own story holds a devastating secret.

The Inspiration

Losing Her, Crux Jinx’s first feature production, grew from our founder Dave Moutray’s own experiences. He best can describe the inspiration of this remarkable film:

This film was my first real dive into my past, an exploration of what it means to lose someone who is still alive and well, yet gone forever from your life. While I never did the unimaginable thing the protagonist in Losing Her does, I can relate to what drove him to do it: he was desperate to feel better about his loss, and being with others that felt the same made him feel like he’s normal, and most importantly, not alone.

Losing Her was a heartfelt attempt to appeal to those who have felt a great loss and remind them they are not alone in the wide range of feelings they have, whether a break-up or funeral that drove them there. Each character experiences denial, anger, or bargaining — while acceptance is something they struggle to find.

The Making

We cut our teeth on Losing Her. Everything we’ve done since is built on the foundation of this first film experience. The talented cast speaks for itself, as many having enjoyed significant success in their careers since. The amazing Kathreen Khavari most recently of Big Little Lies, and Shahaub Roudbari bring energy and passion to this film.

The Result

We were fortunate to have several screenings of the film, from theaters in San Francisco and East Bay to film festivals across the country. Having audience members come up afterward and express how well they related to the film affirmed we achieved our goal. One young lady told me our film captured exactly what she felt when her boyfriend broke up with her, and that it did with the full scope of loss. That was greater than any award we won for that film — because we were able to do something every filmmaker wants: we moved our audience to connect with the story on a personal level and made someone feel a little less alone.
